2008. Glyn Hughes for Christos Christou
As Christos paintings become more minimal, they do, at the same time, project more strength. And the tension they evoke can be strong.
The sure and confident brush – stroke, even when they are just a few seemingly delicate marks, have an innate power, suggesting that the weight of the whole canvas is supportive of the image; implying considerable concentration on all areas.
Not a dash, line or empty space is without an essential message.
Occasionally a partly known image breaks through, but, there again, it is the deceptive simplicity which holds the attention.
The canvas becomes a welcoming space giving air to, and yet, also welcoming the colour of applied paint.
